Given how there is only one (negative) review, I've decided to share my thoughts as well and give it a different (more positive) perspective. So, this light novel series is divided into 2 volumes, the first one being 130 pages long and the second one being 230 pages long (around there); and so it is quite a simple and easy read in an afternoon or two. The first volume shows how ace got his devil fruit and how he founded and built his crew with several members being named and becoming somewhat plot relevant albeit only in the novel. This first volume follows Ace and Deuce, who is actually the novel's protagonist and narrator, from their first encounter in the East Blue until Sabaody, and their adventures. Most of the info on volume is new, but there's nothing groundbreaking in terms of importance. Nevertheless it managed to keep me interested. The second volume deals with a lot of things that were already shown in the manga/anime, like the Ace/whitebeard relationship, Blackbeard's conflict, Ace's execution et cetera. i do feel however, that the light novel feels more complete in terms of portraying ace's real feelings and emotions than the manga did, though maybe it is because it is all in a written format with no images and it is easier to portray those things. Overall, If you like One Piece and if you feel curious about this light novel I'd tell you to give it a try. It's an enjoyable read.
Washed up on the shores of a deserted island at the edge of the East Blue Sea, two men from different backgrounds unite in their shared thirst for adventure. One of them, Portgaz D. Ace, will follow in his infamous father’s footsteps as the fearless captain of a pirate crew. The other, Masked Deuce, becomes the reluctant first member of Ace’s Spade Pirates. Survival is not enough for these seafaring buccaneers, as together they seek treasure, excitement, and a route to the New World. (Source: Viz Media)
Ace’s Story makes Ace’s character and arc in One Piece more whole. It offers lots of untold background and detailed life as a pirate. The first couple of chapters are very descriptive and you can feel the dry heat from the pages. This manner of writing is consistently found throughout the two volumes and makes the read a lot more engaging. An issue I have with these two books are the rehashing of One Piece knowledge we already know. It discusses things we already know well, and does so often. While I don’t mind being reminded of something, the extent of which this author takes itis a bit much. Besides that, the new stories are compelling enough to override that issue a healthy amount. It’s a sweet tale, and a definite must-read for any Ace fan. Good stuff. 7/10
Completely forgettable. Some guys decided to write a spin off story about Ace's journey/Pirate adventures, or so it seemed. Turns out it's the same brief story Oda tells you in the original manga/anime. Ace gets beaten by Whitebeard, Joins him, Blackbeard betrays Whitebeard, Ace goes after him, fights Jinbe, meets Shanks. Everyone already seen this shit. The only new thing here is how Ace found and eat flame flame fruit, everything else is forgettable. They could've expanded the story in a whole other level, but choose not to do it. Such a waste of time. I'M GONNA SAY IT AGAIN, THERE'S NOTHING NEW HERE BESIDESMERA MERA GETTING A SPECIAL ORIGIN SCENE.
