Takashi Ikeda is responsible for Sasameki Koto, perhaps the most bog-standard 2000s girl’s love series out there. His newest manga, on the other hand, is a cut above. "The Two of Them Are Pretty Much Like This" is a yuri 4-koma about scriptwriter Elly and her voice actress girlfriend Wako, and their domestic life together. There’s a significant age gap between them that leaves Wako as something of a cute pet in the relationship, and while this isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, I found it quite charming. To hammer this in further, the two of them are drawn in noticeably different artstyles, with Elly receiving moredetailed linework and Wako being far more moe. As far as slices of life go, this is top-tier, highlighting all the cute, sweet, and strange moments of living together with your lover. It’s not pornographic, but it’s also not afraid to talk about sex. Wako and Elly are sweet, understandable characters, and their interactions with each other feel genuine and true to life. Given how emotionally immature yuri characters tend to be, even in adult-focused series, this is a breath of fresh air. While at first it seems like the supporting cast are going to detract from the central relationship (as notably happened in Sasameki Koto), Wako and Elly’s friends are good fun to be around. It’s neat to see small circles of lesbian friends depicted in something like this so realistically. Of all things, there's an incidental trans subplot late in the manga. I was terrified Ikeda would drop the ball on this, but it's handled kindly and left open-ended without much incident when the manga concludes. That's my one knock against this series, it ended serialization after 104 chapters but could have just as easily went on for 100 more. While I wish it had, I'm more than happy with what we got.
Ellie Sakuma is a 32-year-old scriptwriter busy and hard at work, while Wako Inuzuka is a 22-year-old rookie voice actress struggling to get her career off the ground. The two women have known each other for roughly two years now, and despite their somewhat contrasting lifestyles, the roommates still manage to spend some time together everyday. Throughout the year they've now shared as roommates, Ellie and Wako enjoy any brief moments of each other's company in their otherwise hectic lives. [Written by MAL Rewrite]
Man, that was incredible! While Ikeda-sensei's previous work, Sasameki Koto, disappointed me overall, I was pleasantly surprised with this series. Such a good balance of an adult relationships, lives, and drama that really kept me bingeing until the end! Characters really make this series as amazing as it is. The main couple, Wanko and Sakuma, are so adorable and wonderful to follow as they enjoy their lives and find where they want to go as time goes on. They aren't overly complex, but they aren't boring either. Wanko had some struggles in the past, both romantically and professionally, but she continues to push herself forward toachieve her goals. Sakuma continues to be somewhat successful in her work while pushing herself to reach her larger dreams. The side characters are quite interesting and fun too, but they are also where most of the drama is... and it's a good thing! It keeps the main couple comfy and soft without letting the series become monotonous. Meeting other VAs, directors, and screenwriters through the MCs really gives a variety of characters to enjoy. The story is fairly dry when it comes to the main characters, but the other characters make sure to prevent any boredom! Wanko struggles as a VA but finds comfort in her lovey-dovey home life with Sakumo, and that is where most of the main plot comes from. It has its ups and downs, but it is a nice progression. What people might find more interesting to discuss are the side characters. There is drama, unrequited love, romance, and more to be found. What is most notable here is the writing is well done! There are plots that are solved subtly, to the point some readers might even miss the conclusions! Not every side character has a conclusion to their story, but it makes the story feel more realistic. Remember, this is Wanko and Sakumo's story, not theirs. Just like reality, not everyone's story can be seen; people's lives continue out of view, or in this case panels. 10/10 I consider this a MUST READ when it comes to slice of life. While it is dry at times, there is enough story and character variety to keep things fresh and fun without muddling everything. With 104 chapters, it feels like the story was not enough yet still satisfying. The conclusion feels quick to some, but it feels just right to me... even if I would've loved another 100 chapters of this series.
