Story - This was one of my favourite arcs in the anime 'Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni' and it was even better in the manga! It gives much more depth to the characters of Ooishi, Rika and Mion and introduces Akasaka. Art - As always, the Higurashi art is beautiful and in parts creepy (especially some of the scenes with Rika earlier in the volume) and I felt that in parts the art bettered what was shown in the anime. Character - Rika is the most important character in this volume as this is when the story really deepens and she shows a different side to hercharacter completely. It also shows how determined and stubborn she is. Enjoyment - As I said, it has always been one of my favourite arcs but only has two or three episodes in the anime so it was nice that it was lengthened and the mahjong chapter was very interesting too. There were quite a few scenes that were not included in the anime. Overall - A fantastic Higurashi volume and, obviously, if you liked the previous volumes you MUST read this one as it begins to give more of an insight of what is really happening in their quiet little psychotic village!

Synopsis

Detective Mamoru Akasaka is used to catching criminals and solving fast-paced cases in Tokyo, but he has never imagined that his job would send him to the quiet village of Hinamizawa. Disguised as a tourist, Akasaka decides to take in the sights, all while gathering information for his true mission: to find a kidnapped child. The dam construction project in Hinamizawa threatens to decimate the village, and a group of villagers has kidnapped the grandson of the Minister of Construction, holding him ransom in exchange for the project's cancellation. This was a great arc, but sadly it was a little shorter than others. I was able to like Akasaka a lot and i started to like Ooshi a little more too. As far as art goes, this is the cutest Rika that has been drawn so far, maybe it's the fact that she is younger than in the other arcs. This arc was very different than the others, taking place before the Oyashiro's curse has started, and the Dam project war is still happening. I really liked that this arc is so different than others, sadly only two episodes of this arc were put into theanime and I liked seeing other stuff that happened. This arc seems to be overlooked a bit, but i say that it should be read.

Himatsubushi is definitely the worst Higurashi arc. That doesnt mean its bad though. its decent, gives ooishi more character and makes him more likable, introduces us to akasaka, and shows us what happpened before higurashi. It does its job well. Story wise its also the weakest consideering its the shortest so no amazing writing could have popped up in the manga. Characters were great, young rika is so cute and i loved how they made ooishi more human. Art was okay, nothing quite special but it quite decent and great at times Overall, Himatsubushi is a decent arc. its the weakest arc of all, though. 7/10

I mean, its okay, it gets the job done - progressing the story forward while revealing a bit more lore - but eh.. it's so.. Cheesy, man. I don't know how else to put it. Its written and drawn in a way that wants to force you to "feel" things but because it's so forced it feels inauthentic. Still, Akasaki is DEFINITELY one of the better male characters in this psycho-women filled series. Now that I think about it I can't find a reason why i think Akasaki is cool. Maybe because he plays Mahjong REALLY good and that reminded me of Kaiji. Could be. Anyway,Read it, its short, and you want to know the entire story right? You're too committed now, don't give up, why would you give up? Why do you always give up? Keep on. Not everything is going to be peak. Be okay with experiencing mids too.
