In short: Lovely manga with cute and interesting characters and an increasingly messy plot. The reason for this is that Ame demo Hare Demo is a rewrite of the author's earlier two-volume comedy manga Todo no Tsumari no Uchouten. It's evident that she wanted to reuse the setting and the base plot for an entirely different setting with a heavier drama plot she had in mind. You can tell this is the case because you can feel the sudden shift in tone at the seams of these two plots stitched together and this contrast almost gave me whiplash. Without giving spoilers, I want to say thatthe way comedic elements were retconned with grim backstories, seemingly important points early in the story were forgotten, and pivotal plot elements in the last volume clearly conflicting the story that was laid out in the first volume is jarring and dissatisfying and will put off some readers. (Un)fortunately, I'm a shallow person who cares less about a cohesive plot and more about cute girls being cute together, and Ame demo Hare demo succeeds at delivering exactly that. For that reason, I can say I enjoyed it a lot and I strongly recommend it to the kind of person who likes fluffy comedic love stories of seemingly incompatible couples surviving trial-by-fire drama with a sombre backdrop.
Recently having moved away from her rural hometown, Mikoto Yamada struggles to make friends at Uchouten High School. Noticing Mikoto sitting alone, the student council secretary, Ren Nekozaki, decides to utilize her position to create a club specifically to allow the two to spend time together, using a shrine near the school as their club room. Soon enough, their club space is encroached upon by four strangers: Takuya Kumakura, Yozora Usagida, Airi Shishimaru, and Ritsu Pengin. These girls share the plight of having interests that are too niche to justify the creation of a club. As Uchouten requires all its students to participate in club activities, the four form their own club to let each member do whatever they want. This leaves but one remaining issueβa club room is required for a club to be official. As a result, the four decide to do all they can to convince Mikoto to let them share the shrine. While Mikoto agrees, Ren is wary, as she believes the four stragglers will impede the time she shares with Mikoto. But despite her reservations, Ren eventually concedes. Although these girls all have different interests, they will nonetheless come to form an intimate, unbreakable bond. [Written by MAL Rewrite]
I'm here writing this review as a contrast to the two here already (good reviews btw, you should read them). They've captured what I think is the main takeaway of the story rather well. It's fluffy Girl Love....simple as that. What makes me write to you on this night is where I disagree. YES, the last 4 chapters REALLY needed to be 8-10 more and it feels kind of jarring....but you know what? It really wasn't all that bad...if you read a lot of manga you're used to the final chapter time jump (usually the same that happens here, high school to 1st college year). As for the story losing the script from Ch15+....it really doesn't. It DOES add something that really did need more time to cook to have a real impact but it was fine...it didn't ruin the story but added a bit of a downer, the thought of what could have been. All in all it was exactly what you could ask for in a fluffy girl love manga, sweetness, longing, a bit of low impact drama...it was a nice read.
