Basilisk no Musume is a manga that can't seem to make up its mind. As a reader, I was confused whether I should root for the heroine or not. The prolouge of the story is excellent but once it gets to the point, we're lead in so many dirrections, its difficult to keep up. The mangaka Chiho Saito's characters almost always have two faces to them, so the sudden change in character's motivations or nature was expected, but I felt like I was made to go through a lot just to wind up right back where I was before. The ending was also very sad.I do feel like the author kept throwing wrenches into the plot, though, so maybe it'd have been better as a longer manga where there could be more drawn out story arc. The art is beuatiful. You can recognize Saito's art immediantly, its very stylized, which is something we see less and less in the manga world. I liked the idea of the characters well enough but I found myself constantly frustrated with the heroine and her bad desicions. It was definately work the read, despite that, however, as the resolution, while sad, left me feeling better about her as a person. I would recommend it.
Japan, 1920: Momiji, a pretty 17-year-old girl, is an orphan. The wealthy Midorikawa family adopted her years before, when she was a child. Her best friend is Basilis, a splendid mare. Momiji is in love with one of the Midorikawa sons, and the boy loves her too. But, trouble is, Momiji's adoptive father, the old Midorikawa clan head, wants to marry Momiji himself. Momiji tries to run away, but she is caught and eventually forced to marry her adoptive father. Japan, 1997: a lot of time has passed, and all the previously mentioned characters are dead. But new characters are there, the descendants of the original ones... including a beautiful mare by the name of NeoBasilis... A new love triangle is forming between Ryuuto, Shuka and Shikata. This wont be long , and dont read if u dont want spoilers , Its simply an advice not to read this I dont mind love triangles , squares , whatever it is and I dont mind pulling my hair because of the situations that occur or tragedies or changes of the character's mind [ Spoilers ahead ] The thing is , The main character "Shuuka "is simply a slut , You can not enjoy a manga if the main character was unreasonable , ok am not against being with a different man in the manga all shoujos have those , but the way itsbrought in this manga totally ruined it , Like , Sorry again its a review but I must include this , As a warning , I wont say the end or names so u wont know , the main character flies from a man to another , sleeps with them all , ok we didnt reach the bad point yet , the bad point is that this happens every 3 chapters or so , and for no particular reason [ she slept with one of the love square because he brought her a nice table with food when she was tired ? ] totally unreasonable , dont be deceived by this manga , the story seems good and art is also good , but the 16 chapters were so fast and full with unreasonable acts , totally a waste of my time because I value a reasonable/logical events and conclusions , and totally hate too fast paced-lets finish it type , or maybe it wasnt the reason , just that the main character did too much unreasonable stuff . In the end sorry again if u think those were spoilers , but they really weren't and you'll see what I mean from first chapters and simply dislike this manga , such a waste of time when u put high hopes for it , and again its my personal opinion , if u dont mind stupid moves and reasons and unexplained illogical events and conclusions , then by all means read it and enjoy it.
