With “Thigh High: Reiwa Hanamaru Academy,” what you see is what you get. The manga delivers on its premise of “high school boys who dress and act like high school girls.” It’s short, silly, and entertaining, but never pushes itself further than that. Thigh High has no significant, overarching narrative to speak of. Each chapter is typically a stand-alone story that revolves around a specific character or gag. The jokes are at their best when they parody or critique some aspect of femininity; the male characters are often used to draw attention to the absurdity of gender roles in a playful, comedic way. Most of thetime, however, the wacky scenarios are just thinly veiled excuses to have the characters strip down to their underwear. This fanservice may be part of the appeal for some people, but it can be gratuitous and voyeuristic in a way that may be off-putting to older readers. The cast is one of the best parts of the manga. Each character is unique, memorable, and brings something different to the story. They’re designed in a way that makes them feel distinct and interesting, with varied body types, facial features, and hairstyles. The characters are all very loveable and the dynamics between them are well-defined and consistent. The artwork perfectly matches the story’s lighthearted tone. The characters are typically drawn in a way that emphasizes their cuteness, giving Thigh High a certain aesthetic charm that other gag manga tend to lack. What’s more impressive, though, is how versatile the art can be, switching to a more detailed or exaggerated style if the punchline calls for it. Still, I was left with a lot of questions by the end. Do women even exist in the world of Thigh High? If so, do they dress and act like men? If not, where do babies come from? The story isn’t interested in answering any of these questions. Even though it’s just a gag manga, it still would have been interesting for these topics to be explored. Thigh High is a fun, comedic story with great art and memorable characters. It accomplishes what it sets out to do, but doesn’t go beyond that, leaving the overall experience feeling a bit one-note. The sexualization of the characters may be too much for some readers, but for those who aren’t phased, the manga is perfect for a quick burst of entertainment.
Hanamaru Academy is just like any other all girls' school, but it has one big difference: the lovely, lively ladies that make up its student body are all handsome hunks! From the cute uniforms to their pastimes, these boys live every day of their youth to the fullest. A hidden paradise of "JK Danshi" awaits! (Source: MU)
This manga is everything. It was very enjoyable when I read it. The idea of guys wearing female clothing as the norm certainly was interesting. This manga certainly did a good job showing off the boys in a cute way in their outfits rather than making it feel like guys simply cross-dressing or just simply pretending to be girls cause of course this is about a world where guys wear female clothing, act, and think like girls as the norm. From wearing makeup and loving cute things to admiring the way each other dress. Of course irl guys can also do the same, but thismanga goes further with the gag of how female characters are portrayed in manga and anime. I loved that there were many tropes that female characters experience that are shown in anime and manga portrayed onto the boys. Some of the tropes that were made in this story I liked when the boys' skirts being blown in the wind and the boys being worried about it, some of the boys being jealous about each other's chest size, or of course the well known tripping onto another person and accidentally touching their chest. There's a couple more, but everyone should certainly read the manga to see what other tropes were shown. The characters really do make up a big part of the manga. Each one is interesting and well-designed. They are all memorable and enjoyable to read about! I would say my favorites are Kiritani, Mahiro, and Yumekawa. The story of course is comedy and slice of life. I really liked it and enjoyed the many jokes made in this. Of course this kind of story may not be for everyone as it may be too weird or silly for some people. I would say that if you didn't like Binan Koukou Chikyuu Bouei-bu Love, Fairy Ranmaru, or shows/works that are similar then Hanamaru isn't for you. I know for sure many people who don't understand the purpose of those shows/works look at these types of stories as bad or terrible even though the purpose of it is to have fun and make jokes off these ideas and concepts. From magical boys to over sexualized male fairies to boys wearing and acting like girls it is enjoyable and all in good fun!
When i heard about this manga i instantly bought it, and i wasn't disappointed with what i got!! This story is so much fun. Each chapter is a different event happening at this skirt-wearing boy school. The main character is a loveable class rep and sweetly innocent as he gets dragged into everyones drama. This manga is a funny comedy about (in my opinion) more friendship than romance and is just overall wholesome and non-toxic. I was kinda scared the story would be tó sexual or something (i mean, come on look at the cover etc) , but it isn't a yaoi. Don't worry tho,its literally about boys wearing skirts, bras, panty's and stockings and there is an hot spring chapter, so you'll get all the spicy you need ;) i really enjoyed it and i hope there will be more volumes (an Anime?!?!?!). you should definitely give this a read!
