After watching some rugby animes like All Out!!, Try Knights and Number24, and as a rugby player, I can completely confirm this is the best rugby story in a manga/anime so far. Its a shame they ended this manga too soon beacuse it had a really big potential, exploring some aspects of rugby, like rugby 7, that other productions didnt even matter to talk a about it. Its true that is has some similarities to Haikyuu, but at this point I think its really hard to create a really good sport story and not founding something similar to Haikyuu, so dont let that idea discourageyou from reading this manga.
Beast Children is the first manga by Kento Terasaka, whom you may know of Green Green Greens, but that doesn't mean that his earlier work is any worse. Beast Children is a masterclass of character writing, they are all interesting and unique. Most characters don't get their development as this series was cut short by Jump, but the main characters are all very well written. The art is great and while there are a few panels where the faces of characters just look plain of, most of the series does look great. The story is pretty bland as this was clearly just a start of somethingway longer and because of this the ending is quite lackluster. But what is there is all great. It manages to suck you in and root for the main character almost instantly. The matches are all fun and this gives the series a lot of charm. The biggest flaw of the series is again the abrupt ending, but that is not something at fault of the author. Even with the ending I would still recommend the series as it is a while short fun ride.
Despite having never played the sport, short-statured Sakura Shishigaya is dedicated to rugby in every way. After watching the late professional Onotora "The Beast" Itsuki play on the field, Sakura has been inspired to take up the game. However, as the sole member of his middle school's rugby team, he is unable to practice nor experience the sport with other players. Yet when he encounters Onotora's son Yukito, Sakura seizes the chance to overcome his predicament. Though initially dismissive of Sakura's ability, a quick sparring match manages to impress Yukito. In return, Yukito reveals that he will be attending Hyakkengawa, enticing Sakura to follow suit in hopes of joining the same team. But, when Sakura enrolls into the high school, Yukito is nowhere to be found. Nevertheless, Sakura believes that Yukito led him to the school for a reason. At Hyakkengawa, the rugby team has been mentored by the one and only Onotora, and, in Sakura, they have met the newest member of their family. [Written by MAL Rewrite]
TLDR; Rugby manga with Haikyu vibes Disclaimer: I give 10's to bump up series that I believe deserve better scores. This series is not a 10. What you should expect if you read Beast Children: Oh look it's Hinata Speedy boy gotta run fast "I can't really relate to this level of energy, but I'm into it." "I can't really relate to this level of closet boy love, but I'm into it." Kinda off-putting art and character design, especially considering how new it is "When and how did I start feeling things? Oh right it's sports manga" I just started caring about and remembering the huge amount of characters you dumped on me andnow you're dumping another dozen? WHERE'S THE ENDING?! 'spretty gud tho.
