Piwi: Fushigi na Ikimono

A well done spinoff about Helck's, arguably best side character. To start of this review, I highly suggest that you check out Helck first. It's not perfect but I've found it to be a very good fantasy manga that starts out as a comedy and then becomes a darker adventure series. The manga's cute comic relief character is this yellow bird(?) called Piwi. What I've found really good about Piwi as a character is that he radiates that charming, child-like innocence. Every scene he is in is pure dopamine to the brain and they always use him sparringly, just at the right moments. This spinoff doesit similarly. Piwi here is like Totoro. The stories revolve around him but he is not the main protagonist. He serves as the main cogwheel to let the stories reach their conclusions. I think it's a very good way to use a character who, in the end of the day, isn't all that deep. The stories are also a lot more lighthearted, akin the earlier chapters of Helck. In conclusion, Piwi: Fushigi na Ikimono is a wholesome and fun read that is a nice extra to have once you've read trough Helck (which you should) It's also very short so it doesn't waste your time and the cherry on top is that the book also includes a few 4-koma stories which are also just funny and adorable. I don't get how is this manga currently sits below 7 in ratings. It's a crime.
