Reading this is like laying under the shade of a spring tree on a sunny day with the cool wind blowing through and the sound of birds chirping up on the tree. It's such a chill vibe with these laid back characters. Complete with the somehow "abstract" art style, as I like to call it because sometimes I have to look closely to see what I am seeing, was a breath of fresh air. The lines and expressions on their faces, especially Takatsuki's lovely face and adorable personality you can't help but smile while reading. It's such a happy and endearing read that I justwant these two couples to live wonderful and contented lives. I loved it so so so much it makes me really happy.
When did love start? Kisses tasting of cigarettes. The view from the veranda. In this small corner of town, they gradually fall in love. Tsubaki, who recently moved into town due to a job transfer. A gay couple living next door, Toyohashi and Takatsuki. And Tsubaki's elusive senior, Azuma. While bewildered in an unfamiliar surrounding, Tsubaki's naturally rigid heart slowly unfastens for the "first time," and he starts knowing what love is. (Source: Kasakura Shuppansha, translated)
It's a much better slice of life story than it is a BL. As a slice of life, it's delectable. The beat by beat of the story is nuanced and relaxed. The writing is good (love that part where we get to see the in-universe fiction). The characters are grounded and their interactions are full of depth. The unusual art works really good with the narrative as well. As a BL, it's decent but could be more. While the relationship between the couples are nuanced and layered, the chemistry are strong, and I really enjoy the first couple in all of their peculiar dynamics, the second couplefeels a bit too slow burn for the end result. The second couple feels more based on loneliness than love. But that's a minor complaint, I feel. I still enjoy this a lot.
