Being a fat ugly bastard myself I liked this manga. A NEET who was falsely accused of being a molester when he was a salaryman puts a -255 into his appearance stat and cripples himself to never be able to touch a woman or money ever again to get godlike powers. It's a humorous/sad premise. The main hero characters are all very likeable too with no real "problematic" traits other than keeping a secret from each other. I felt it ended way too abruptly though, like the author was sprinting towards the finish line and ended it on a cliffhanger of sorts. If you havea couple of hours to kill it's definitely worth a read. I'm looking forward to the anime that premieres this July.
Wrongly convicted of a crime, 34-year-old Shigeru Yoshioka loses everything, including his trust in women, and withdraws from society as an unemployed recluse. One day, he stumbles upon a way to travel to another world. When a mysterious status screen appears on his computer, Shigeru sacrifices his looks to gain an overwhelming 100 trillion and 5,100 parameters. Now reborn as an "Absolute God," he begins his second life in another world. (Source: MAL News)
There is an anime that premiered recently (July 6, 2025). I caught up with the first two episodes available, and it has a main character with the looks of an ugly bastard archetype from an NTR manga, but with a heart of gold. He is the eponymous Busaman Gachi Fighter, or Ugly Mug Epic Fighter. The anime is based on a one-volume light novel of the same name, which also had a manga adaptation. I have not read the light novel, but I finished the manga. Thus, I could see that anime and manga have different approaches in the sequencing of events when it comesto storytelling decisions. This review focuses on the manga, but the anime provided impetus for reading it. The story is an isekai, and the main character took advantage of the starting screen prior to his transfer to the other world by sacrificing several traits, the bigger the sacrifice, the larger the bonus to stats and skills. This gives Shigeru some overwhelming stats and skills, but at the cost of being damaged by 10% of health per second from the touch of a female. The ugly bastard looks comes from this sacrifice as well. This is actually a refreshing take on an isekai. Instead of another high school kid who got overpowered skills from the plot, it is a former salaryman aware of his current circumstances and takes care not to display his abilities or upset the common sense of this new world. He’s a main character with a good head on his shoulders; unlike the other three people he partied with who are irritatingly naive. There’s a development that reveals that the other people he partied with are not unrelated people. Shigeru, because of his actions in his prior life, has significantly impacted these people. There is actual character development. Now, Shigeru’s party mates are still annoying and insufferably naive, but the reader gets some backstory that explains why they are that way. Then there’s Seika. She’s one of Shigeru’s party members and she’s the most annoying one. She has this supreme confidence that borders on arrogance, but it comes from a place of naivete and curiosity. She gets tolerable a bit later on, due mostly to Shigeru's efforts in teaching her the ways of the world by taking her under his wing. In a nutshell, the story is interesting. It ticks several boxes for me in what I look for in a manga: a mature protagonist, an underdog story, and a unique take on the isekai genre. It is mostly an adventure story with comedic bits, but that is just to balance the dark backstories of the characters. However, the manga adaptation is lacking. It ends at the end of an arc, but not quite the end of the story. It feels like it got axed. Therefore, I would recommend this manga as a supplementary to the anime. Read this first and get your closure from the anime.
Uglymug, Epicfighter is a weird manga for sure. We have a character that is not similar to the thousands of others out there. We have this Uglymug named Yoshioka Shigeru, who in his previous life was an epic salesman who got his life turned around due to a falsely claimed sexual assault in a train ride. Now a neet, horrified of females due to the trauma, gets a pop-up message similar to a virus warning, that he can start a new life. Weirdly enough, being ugly in this old life, he sacrifices he's chance to handsomeness for epic stats and so starts the new life of Uglymug, Epicfighter. To behonest, I really got interested in this series mainly due to the absolute "uglyness" of this character Shigeru. But he's not that ugly in my opinion. This is a manga which has something different compared to the other thousands similar isekai series, which is the looks of the main character. But don't let that scare you off. The comedy is very enjoyable, for me at least, and these companions Shigeru got transported with have all different kind of personalities which are quite interesting as well. Talking about them would make this a spoiler so we'll skip that. This manga series is not about Shigeru alone and his Godlike powers. This series will give us a great story of companionship and the trust between these characters as well as Shigerus' own will to protect and care for them and none of his companions doesn't even care how ugly he is which makes this a bit wholesome as well. They try to help him however they can as well as enjoy each others company in their adventure. The art seems kind of mediocre at some parts but I do like the character art of our great Uglymug, Epicfighter Shigeru. Don't even know why but he has a mole with a hair sticking out. Being fat and ugly doesn't mean the art of the character is bad at all. The environment could have gotten a little work on it considering that the characters got the most artwork. Some cute faces and smug faces also makes this more enjoyable to read. But whenever there are colored pages, it's honestly really cool and good looking. If this was a full colored manga, it would have really nice looking environment and all that. Overall, quite enjoyable. Not that long of a series and can be read in a few hours or so. Only downside is the sudden ending kind of like feeling but otherwise I did enjoy the story and the smug face from Shigeru and the despair look one of his companions gets sometimes. It's a hit or miss kind of series and I think many wouldn't like it but at the end of the day. We can't all enjoy everything there is. 6/10 would be my score and recommend it only because it's quite short.
