*Non-Spoiler Review* All Catagories: 9 It's so rare to find a BL with more "manly" characters, and that alone makes Midnight Rain stand out among the others. The story is good, and so are the characters, but the fact that they feel more realistic and older really helps everything else sink in. The art choice is well done to convey what needs to be conveyed without losing the impact of these two grown adults in their daily life. There are, of course, lovely hot and heavy moments to enjoy (and by gods we enjoy them). I appreciate all the detail to the character's lives and mannerisms thatyou find in an older person's life. (Us older people appreciate when our own troubles are noticed, like laundry issues...) The story does feel set apart from what we usually see in the BL genre, but I think in large part it has to do with the characters. Again, because of their age and mannerisms being so different, the characters really sell the story as a whole. The author did a good job of putting in these feeling of their age as well (see first scene in the entire manga where a main character comes off as some house-husband. I laughed!) So yeah, all in all this is a great work I happily recommend for how different it feels, and how captivating the characters are. Fantastic manga.
Ethan lives a monotonous life trying to pay off his crippling debt—until the day Mike appears at the neighborhood laundromat looking the worse for wear. Both men find themselves struggling in different ways to go on, and it’s these struggles that bring them together in the throes of passion while simultaneously threatening to tear them apart. Midnight Rain is one of the few BL manga out there with more mature/adult characters so it makes for a nice change. The story is a little more of a cliché one with the main character picking up a beat up stranger from the street, tending to his wounds and keeping him at his apartment to care for him. They develop a giving and taking relationship and eventually one thing leads to the other... It has some drama aspects (but not as much as one would guess from the cover or the title), which are mostly based on them ending up with wounds from street fights.(if guys with band-aids or bandages are your thing: good find!) The characters are pretty endearing, mature and not as annoying or boring because you feel like you've seen them many times before. The unfortunate part is that we only learn the bare minimum of their past and circumstances relevant to the story. But thats a oneshot problem I guess. The art is nice, the sex scenes neat and not too short or too long. Overall a short but enjoyable BL that at least differs from most BL manga
