I'm only writing this review to get this message out: This series is an ONGOING Pixiv manga and it has more than 40 chapters as I'm writing this review. It has always been a Pixiv manga and it got a surprise physical release which this page is about. MAL has set its own rules about seperating web-manga from physical releases which they follow to a fault. This series is NOT finished. It's your average, fluffy shoujo ai. The characters are cute as buttons but they aren't that deep even when the author tries to give them dramatic backstories. Supporting characters are too supporting. No one seemsto have a problem with the girl dating a literal monster, even though the author loves to remind the reader this world doesn't accept monsters and people will usually attack them on sight. Whenever any drama appears, it gets usually solved in the same chapter. The author seems to focus on Monster x Human stories, but this series is very different to their other work. It focuses almost purely on the interractions and lives of the two main characters, rather than having a traditional story. It almost feels like the author draws this series to clear their own mind between focusing on the other, story driven manga. It definitely has a soul healing SOL vibe to it, but don't expect anything more.
In the middle of a secluded forest lives a lonely monster. Isolating herself from humanity due to her appearance, she lives each day yearning for company. One day, her wish comes true when she meets a blind stranger walking around the woods near the empty house she occupies. Unable to see the monster's appearance, the girl—Lily Blind—treats her with a kindness that she has never known. Desiring to form a connection, the monster—nicknamed "Heath" by Lily—decides to lie about her identity. After a series of misunderstandings, Heath finds herself struggling with the guilt of her actions. When Heath suspects that Lily is moving away, she resolves to confess her love before it is too late. Bocchi Kaibutsu to Moumoku Shoujo explores the rapidly deepening love between two girls that have never quite been understood. [Written by MAL Rewrite] Note: This entry is for the print edition only.
I see this still hasn't been fixed to note the true number of chapters in this work. I've actually read up to chapter 42, for the record. Anyway, I liked this manga a lot, because gay monster girls are a rarity, but I have to admit it's not good. It's just that everything with gay monster girls I've seen so far has been an open trash fire, and this is relatively normal shoujo ai, so it looks amazing by comparison. Art 6/10 Good enough, but kind of basic. There's more shading later on, but it's hard to say the art has improved over the course of the manga. The characters are consistently on-model, if that helps, it's just that the lineart is very basic. Nothing to complain about, but nothing exceptional either. Character 5/10 Heath and Lily are... cute. They're sickeningly cute, and it's quite enjoyable to watch them, even if Lily's name (Lily Blind, literally 'blind yuri') makes me unreasonably angry. They have some basic personality traits, and they bounce off each other nicely, and that's... basically them. It's wholesome, and nothing bad ever happens. Most of the other characters are bland, but inoffensive, and I have difficulty remembering their names or faces, as it's been a little while since I read this. That's probably not a good sign for their personalities. Story 5/10 Did I mention that nothing bad ever happens? Heath is a monster. A (admittedly adorable) chimera of lizard and something furry with rounded ears. It's mentioned more than once that people hate her for it, but the problem is, they do not. She's treated pretty much normally, in a way that causes no end of problems for my suspension of disbelief. The side characters are WAY too accepting, in other words. Other than that, the romance is handled nicely, and neither of them is pushy or toxic, even if they do occasionally argue. There's not an awful lot of plot besides their relationship, and their relationship is very cute and fluffy, and there's little in the way of conflict, so... it's standard shoujo ai. That's pretty much all I can say about it. Enjoyment 8/10 Despite the above... I liked it. I have no real desire to re-read it, but it was nice. Nobody was screwing their own mother, or twin, or was a literal child, and nobody decided raping their crush was a great idea. It wasn't ridiculous, poorly written, over the top ecchi for dudes to 'enjoy'. It was legitimately gay, and not in that irritating 'only if it's you' way, where nobody ever admits that they're gay. Thumbs up. Overall 6/10 It's cute, wholesome and fluffy, but it's not Shakespeare. I enjoyed it, nonetheless. Though I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't drop it in a heartbeat if someone did a gay Beauty and the Beast manga with some actual conflict and stakes.
Since there is no review of this manga, I would like to give my opinion. I’d like to start saying that I really enjoyed this one, it was a very cute and fluffy little story. The score is only my most objective opinion. Story: 6 The plot of this manga is very simple and straightforward. Monster girl meets cute girl, and they fall in love. The trick is that the cute girl, whose name is Lily Blind, is actually blind (who would have guessed), and so the monster girl, Heath, tries to hide her true nature, so she can have some company. It’s a one-volume story, so therelationship advances rather quickly. So it’s straightforward and a bit rushed, but overall well executed. It’s a very soft yuri, there’s only hugs and kisses, and they are only half naked in a bath scene, so if you’re searching for a more “intimate” manga, look elsewhere. Art: 7 The art is also simple (the original story is from pixiv), but the two protagonists are represented very well, as well as their expressions. The manga that you can buy physically has improved drawing over the one you can find in pixiv, so that’s a plus. Characters: 7 The two protagonists are relatable and work just fine for the objective of this manga. We have Heath, the monster girl, with fluffy ears, a horn, fins and a tail, that has isolated herself into the woods to avoid humans see her; and then there’s Lily, the cute and blind girl who “sees” Heath’s true beauty. Little by little Heath opens her hearts to Lily, and shows her real feelings. Not too much complex, but very compelling. Enjoyment: 9 Reading this manga was a fun ride. I read in two days before going to bed, and it really helped me to relax and forget about my problems. I could feel the authors love in his work, and that is not something I find everyday. I’ll surely follow his next installments. Overall: 7 So in conclusion, don’t give the score I gave too much importance. I recommend this manga to anyone looking for a beautiful love story, and I would really like it had more popularity, because it deserves it.
First and foremost: Dont let the yuri tag prevent you from reading this masterpiece that will make you laught and cry. I dont write reviews very often but this deserves one for being such a good history and have so many good characters. I confess that i had it in my "to read someday" list for a looong time but once i started it i could not stop myself. It's a gret history of both love and forgiveness and how to overcome diferences for the ones you love. Although i do think the autor rushed a bit, the ending of the mangá is a very good ending. Thanks Neji for givin us this lovely history, im looking forward for your next work...
This manga is now complete at 50 chapters. (Plus a few side chapters. Plus a couple NSFW side stories.) I loved this, although I’m a sucker for cute, endearing, yuri, slice-of-life stories. ;) It’s nice to see a blind person depicted in a straight-forward, capable, confident way. Lily’s blindness impacts the story a little at the beginning; after that it’s just who she is. She “sees” as much or more as the sighted characters and is really the one who controls the story progression. Heath is a kind person with a lot of pain, fleshed out more than I expected. I was able to empathize with herfear around trying to be vulnerable to humans. I also enjoyed the side characters. They were varied and interesting, many with their own back/side stories that gave them depth.
