It's a fucking rollercoaster of emotions for all the wrong reasons. The plot itself is actually surprisingly interesting: the MC is forced to live with this spacey gal character, which sounds generic but the MC doesn't give a fuck about her and only cares about cleaning up the messes she makes in his house. The dude is just a master at cleaning his house. That's his thing. Entire chapters dedicated to "oh no, how do I get this juice stain out of my blouse?" and then him explaining the God-given blessing of lemon water and baking soda. He's the goddamn Sherlock Holmes of housekeeping. The mangais wholesome, informational as fuck and the MC is a massive chad. Unfortunately the publishers announced they'd be axing the series after its conclusion due to low sales. This announcement occurred partway through the syndication and... uh, the mangaka had a fucking SEISMIC MELTDOWN at the news. There's literally no other way I can describe it. The ending of the manga goes off the fucking rails, driving the readers into the realm of LEGENDARY BAD. You will notice that the MyAnimeList posting tells you the manga has 25 chapters. You will also notice that the manga itself only goes up to "Chapter 10." Why is this, you might ask. The answer is because Chapter 8 is actually 15 chapters long. It starts at "Chapter 8" and ends on "Chapter 8.99." I'm not fucking with you. How do you prevent your manga from being cancelled? Easy, make it such that it never fucking ends, give us the Sexual Horror equivalent of Haruhi's Endless Eight. And yeah, throughout Chapter 8 we get to see the mangaka losing his goddamn mind in real-time, all while we're subjected to absolute storytelling ASS. As an experience, reading Gal Cleaning! Chapter 8 is like reading the entirety of Berserk's Golden Age Arc except every character is fucking Casca. I had the absolute pleasure of witnessing this disaster as it unfolded in real-time, and I had a support group of some IRL friends to weaken the impact. It's the manga equivalent of watching a squirrel get run over by an 18-wheeler and staring at its dismembered lower-half, just waiting for it to stop twitching. There's just... nothing like it.
Daisuke Kaji does not like your typical gal. To the dutiful high school student, these girls are nothing but crude people who have no regard for anyone else. Daisuke does his best to avoid them, especially Chiriko Iega, whom he considers to be the most unrefined girl at his school. One day, Daisuke finds himself evicted from his apartment due to his father's outstanding debts. His new arrangements send him to stay with the daughter of his father's friendâwho is none other than Chiriko herself. However, the shock of having to live alone with a girl does not even compare to the shock he feels upon seeing the state of her house. Due to Chiriko's negligence in cleaning, her home has become unimaginably dirty, filled to the brim with trash. Fortunately for Chiriko, Daisuke happens to be an excellent cleaner. A one-man army in the field of sanitation, Daisuke has mastered all the chemical combinations and efficient methods necessary for quick and effective cleaning. On Chiriko's insistence, and to avoid living in squalor, Daisuke reluctantly agrees to clean the place with her. With a monumental task ahead of them, the pair work together through the messâfinding that as the house improves, so too does their relationship. [Written by MAL Rewrite]
This is your average comedy romance manga where the guy is shy, serious, neat and the girl is popular, pretty and a total mess. Nothing new here, the story is fair and predictable. There is some originality in the comedy whenever the guy ends up cleaning up the girl's place because these situations are explained as if it was a wiki lesson 101 "How to clean this stain". I'm not sure if those methods explained even work in real life, but it's kind of refreshing. So where does it fail? Well with the second last chapter... Everything fails terrible in there. It is so fucked upthat I wonder if the author was still the same or if he didn't want to sabotage his own work for no reason... Throughout the whole manga, everything follows the same path which is perfectly fine (if you don't expect anything but just your average romance comedy manga). But no... For the second last chapter, how about reading some intense rape scene that goes way too far (there is no penetration, but you can still get your dose of licks and stuff). What the heck happened... This is completely unrelated to Gal Cleaning... as if the author wanted to try out his Hentai skills before becoming a Hentai author. It could be a 7 or even 8. But no, it will stay at 5.
DISCLAIMER: This manga is not what it looks like after chapter 8.94! If you have found this manga without knowing anything about it and you are interested in it because of the summary you have read, genres or something else, then oh boy are you going in blind! Gal Cleaning is a manga about gals and a boy (named Daisuke Kaji) who knows a hell of a lot about cleaning. Kaji is forced, by a certain event, to live with the main gal of the story. He is treated like a "slave" and every chapter has it's unique and cool little tips about cleaning, thatare pretty clever and helpful in real life. And with the chapters rolling I started enjoing this manga more and more. The story is nothing that special, but if you are searching for a manga that has some ecchi elements, some humour and stress-relieving vibes, then this basic comedy/romance manga is for you! Yes it has some dumb things every second gal sentence, yes there are some plot holes here and there but that is to be expected of a short romance manga like that. OOOOR that's what I was going to say if it wasn't for the mental breakdown of the story at halfway through! This story really had quite the potential to become some really enjoyable and happy ecchi/romance/comedy/school manga but it turned out to be more like ecchi/romance/comedy/school/drama/psychological . And after some chapters everything returns to normal. Like, the author had some serious issues at some point and after his medication he returned back to normal and finished his work with the expected ending of such a title. OVERALL: This was a project gone wrong
imagine this got axed after chapter like 8 and it will be a nice albeit short manga about cleaning with nice characters, the only reason this went to shit is cause the author threw a massive tantrum after getting axed and spent approximately half a year giving us absolute garbage, do not read past chapter 8 really, it is absolute trash which is poetically fitting for like a manga that was ostensibly about cleaning the story itself is alright, basic boy who looks very generic, if you've ever seen amano san is full of openings it's functionally the same character model, the art is the onlysaving grace of the manga past chapter 8, it is simplistic but has its own charm, the art for the main female lead is especially charming and looks like what an actual gyaru would look like funnily enough unlike most of the gyaru themed manga we see nowadays.
tl;dr: A manga thatâs really good when itâs simply a light hearted comedy, but that becomes complete trash when it randomly gets dark after which as expected it gets promptly axed. Up to a point, this manga is a really solid lighthearted comedy. There are only two characters, but theyâre both pretty amusing and have good chemistry so its enjoyable to read about their antics. The random tidbits about cleaning effectively are also interesting. Thereâs a sort of ending in chapter 8 that while not that deep is a bit heartwarming. Without a doubt the manga should have ended there. After that it doesnât immediately get terrible, but the plot line following that introduces a new character for whom it immediately switches into a flashback that just ruins the manga. Said flashback isnât the worst thing in the world and it wouldnât be an issue in other manga, but it absolutely did not fit here at all. The flashback is tonally completely inconsistent with the rest of the manga in that it gets really dark. This is critical because the light hearted tone and atmosphere of the manga were a big part of what made it so good and the dramatic shift to darker content is not just completely worthless in terms of what gives value to the manga, but it also makes it impossible to bring back the lightheartedness, and furthermore casts a shade on everything up to that point in such a way that in hindsight it just doesnât seem as good. The flashback also makes absolutely no sense whatsoever in terms of the way characters behave considering such an event happened. The flashback is also completely pointless because it's only a flashback for a character that is completely unimportant, in that it goes into their flashback immediately after they were introduced, but the manga was axed no doubt due to the fans disliking the flashback, and thus said new character never did anything of importance. Thus, it makes absolutely no sense why the flashback exists. Some believe that the author was simply trolling the readers or that his manga had already been scheduled to be cancelled so he was taking out his frustration on the manga. That doesnât really make sense though, because while there isnât much after it, the story does continue after the flashback, at which point it seems to try to pivot back to trying to have an actual solid ending relating to the plot before the flashback. Now, thatâs completely impossible because thereâs no coming back from that level of garbage fire and hence there wasnât really any sort of way to salvage even a reasonably satisfying ending. But that the author at least tried to do that makes it likely that the whole thing was simply them making a major mistake in thinking that taking the manga in that direction was okay, which is even more flabbergasting then them trying to screw things up intentionally. Honestly, it just feels like a terrible waste, because the manga was quite enjoyable until it screwed up and I would have loved to see it continuing in the previous fashion. Furthermore, this will likely be toxic for the author as well, which is sad because he clearly is able to create a competent manga based on how this manga began, and furthermore I really liked his art and thought he was incredibly good at making a simple art style look really nice. This manga is really hard to rate because most of the manga is really good but when it gets bad its really bad. Still, the manga stops right after it gets bad so it's not like thereâs a lot of it. If you stop at chapter 8, which encompasses the majority of the manga, itâs a solid read. But after that it's more like a 1.
