Story: By referencing classics such as Ultraman, Kekkou Kamen and Terminator Oku Hiroya manages to delivery a really out of the box critic about our modern society. How far can people be despicable and wanting to destroy their own community? Is the human being so corrupted that is beyond salvation? How far can you judge someone for not acting according to your own values? When Papico is saving the world, she's the greatest person ever to live, but when she was just an ordinary adult actress she was worthless? What can i say more? ah, this manga has so many sex scenes that it caneasily be labeled as a hentai. If you dont like that, dont read it. Also has a ton of action, its simple to read and would please action manga fans for sure. Art: Oku Hiroya composites his drawn with CGI and photographs just like he did in his other works like Inuyashiki and Gantz. Not a improvment or deterioration. Just what to expect of Hiroya's work. Characters: Only Papico and Rei have what you can call development, but even them are just as flat as you can imagine. For me, it was very fun and a worth reading.

This review will be written in English and Portuguese [PT-BR] Essa resenha será escrita em inglĂŞs e em portuguĂŞs [PT-BR] ____________________________________________________________________ A premissa desperdiçada em Gigant Gigant Ă© uma obra particularmente difĂcil de falar sobre, principalmente por conta de seu autor, Hiroya Oku, desenhista e roteirista da manga Gantz, que Ă© uma das obras mais impactantes que li, e com isso, fui com certa expectativa para Gigant... No fim, posso dizer que essa obra me decepcionou em vários nĂveis, mostrando o quĂŁo patĂ©tico Oku consegue ser. Uma boa premissa, uma pĂ©ssima execução Essa obra, assim como todas desse autor, possui uma premissa extremamente interessante, onde mistura misticismo, sci-fi e sobrenatural, apostandoprincipalmente na construção de universo, para prender os leitores, e isso nĂŁo foi diferente aqui. Gigant possui uma premissa muito intrigante, onde existe todo um mistĂ©rio em torno de um relĂłgio estranho, que faz seu hospedeiro crescer seu tamanho fĂsico, dando “super poderes” a quem o porta, isso por si sĂł Ă© algo que chama atenção, ainda mais quando vemos que existe bem mais coisas por de traz desse equipamento, e isso me prendeu atĂ© o terceiro ou quarto volume, mas acabou que essa premissa por si sĂł nĂŁo se mostrou tĂŁo interessante no fim, e muito disso vem dos pĂ©ssimos personagens que interagem com essa premissa, mas falarei disso mais Ă frente. EntĂŁo podemos dizer que essa obra possui sim os mesmos aspectos que chamam atenção em Gantz e Inuyashiki, sua atmosfera misteriosa, seus elementos sobrenaturais e o estranho fetiche do autor por UFOS e mulheres gigantes, mas isso por si sĂł nĂŁo serviu para cativar minha leitura atĂ© o fim dessa obra, e no final, muitos elementos apresentados foram descartados ou simplesmente esquecidos pelo mangá, pontos esses que sĂł fazem esse universo nĂŁo ter logica narrativa alguma e parecer muito pobre em vários aspectos. O mangá possui um mundo vazio, sem vida e sem nenhum senso de proximidade, muito disso tambĂ©m vem por conta de sua arte. O ápice da preguiça artĂstica Assim como em suas outras obras, o autor utiliza muito do 3d em suas composições de cenários, objetos e personagens, o que eu realmente nĂŁo entendo Ă© como isso ficou tĂŁo ruim aqui, se comparado com Gantz por exemplo. Todas as cenas que o autor utiliza essa tĂ©cnica, tudo fica muito artificial e se afasta muito do traço feito Ă mĂŁo, entĂŁo vemos claramente cenários feitos em um ambiente 3d, e personagens 2d inseridos ali na cena, sem nenhuma preocupação em mesclar as camadas para parecer algo mais natural. Em muitas vezes, atĂ© mesmo o senso de espaço e perspectiva Ă© totalmente perdido, tendo cenários com um ponto de fuga, e os personagens com outros completamente diferentes, criando um incomodo muito grande na leitura, principalmente para aqueles que sĂŁo mais atentos a esses aspectos mais tĂ©cnicos da arte. Infelizmente o problema da arte desse mangá nĂŁo se limita a apenas as cenas prĂ©-renderizadas em 3d, mas tambĂ©m na arte 2d, principalmente na anatomia da Chiho, cara, Ă© muito bizarro ver a anatomia dessa personagem, nada ali faz sentido, parece que todo seu corpo Ă© desenhado com o Ăşnico e exclusivo proposito para chocar mesmo, seus peitos bizarramente enormes, que contrasta muito com seu corpo magro e sua anatomia no geral, que claramente foi desenhado apenas para chamar a atenção dos leitores, para que compre essa obra e veja qual será a nova bizarrice dessa vez... E bem... Quem dera esse fosse o Ăşnico problema. Parece que o autor fugiu de algumas aulas de perspectiva realmente, principalmente quando desenha personagens de perfil, Ă© muito estranho como parece que o crânio dos personagens Ă© diminuĂdo quando desenhados em perfil, e nĂŁo sei se era a intenção de fato, pois ficou muito estanho, ou mesmo olhando para a parte mais básica do mangá, como os enquadramentos e takes, onde basicamente temos cenas que sĂł buscam enfatizar o corpo de alguma personagem, e sem de fato trabalhar para tornar uma cena mais dramática, ou emocionante, toda o senso dramático desse mangá Ă© muito ruim, assim como seu senso de ação. No geral, a arte dessa mangá Ă© muito insuficiente, ainda mais sabendo da habilidade artĂstica do autor. Personagens rasos e desinteressantes A construção de personagens desse mangá Ă© pĂ©ssima, e como basicamente sĂł temos dois personagens principais na obra, no caso Chiho e Rei, isso deveria ser a parte mais “fácil” de fazer, pois temos apenas dois personagens para construir e desenvolver suas relações, mas atĂ© nisso o autor consegue falhar miseravelmente. Falando um pouco mais do Rei, de longe o personagem mais mal escrito desse mangá, Rei Ă© basicamente um colegial completamente desinteressante, sem nenhum proposito de vida claro, sem nenhum conflito interno ou externo, apenas um adolescente normal, que propositalmente nos causa um pouco de raiva e dĂł ao mesmo tempo, pois claramente Rei foi escrito para ser aquele personagem fraco, emotivo, que nunca toma a dianteira sobre nenhum aspecto de sua vida. No começo, achava que verĂamos seu crescimento ao longo do mangá, se tornando uma pessoa forte, que visa proteger Chiho, enfim, esperava que existisse um arco narrativo clássico do personagem fraco que fica forte, seja mentalmente ou fisicamente, mas Rei Ă© literalmente o mesmo do começo ao fim da obra, nem mesmo passando pelas maiores atrocidades que a humanidade já presenciou, como a chegada de Satanás na terra, faz com que ele mude de alguma forma, sei lá, pelo menos demonstrar alguma reação pelas milhões de morte que ocorrem na obra, mas a Ăşnica coisa que Rei faz Ă© chorar incansavelmente e agir como uma criança mimada (a cena do restaurante Ă© simplesmente ridĂcula). E no alto de seu fracasso, Rei conhece uma triz porn0 na qual era superfĂŁ, e apĂłs uma construção de relação inexistente, Rei e essa atriz começam a namorar. Falando agora um pouco mais da Chiyo, ela Ă© a que mais se aproxima de ter um mĂnimo de profundida narrativa nesse mangá. De inĂcio, vemos que Chiyo sofreu muito com a perda de seu pai, e que a partir isso, ela tomou alguns rumos considerados errados em sua vida, como o fato de fazer parte da indĂşstria pornográfica por exemplo, fora toda a relação conturbada com sua famĂlia, onde sua mĂŁe, mesmo desprezando a profissĂŁo de sua filha, a explora financeiramente, e mesmo se incomodando com isso, Chiyo sempre a ajuda, mostrando uma bondade muito grande que Ă© intrĂnseco a personagem. Chiyo tambĂ©m nĂŁo possui um arco narrativo muito bem estipulado em “tempo de tela” no mangá, ela Ă© sim muito mais crĂvel que Rei, onde os fatos que vĂŁo acontecendo ao longo do tempo, a afetam de maneira positiva ou negativa, mudando suas ações e a fazendo tomar a dianteira da unidade de ação e movimentar os eventos da histĂłria, e isso Ă© sim bem legal, mas no fim, ela poderia sim ser melhor aproveitada na obra, principalmente no tocante a construção de sua relação com Rei, e todos os dilemas que essa relação traz, enfim, no final, ambos os personagens sĂŁo mal desenvolvidos ao longo da obra, me fazendo perguntar o porquĂŞ li isso atĂ© o final. Em resumo, essa obra reĂşne tudo o que o fĂŁ de Oku vai gostar, putaria, sci-fi, zangue zorando na tela, mas em compensação traz um pĂ©ssimo plot, personagens mal desenvolvidos e uma premissa desperdiçada, mas ao final, ainda Ă© uma obra que minimamente se difere das merdas que vemos por aĂ. ____________________________________________________________________ [English] The premise wasted on Gigant Gigant is a particularly difficult work to talk about, mainly because of its author, Hiroya Oku, designer and screenwriter of the manga Gantz, which is one of the most impactful works I have read, and with that, I was with some expectation for Gigant... In the end, I can say that this work has disappointed me on several levels, showing how pathetic Oku can be. A good premise, a bad execution This work, like all other works of this author, has an extremely interesting premise, where it mixes mysticism, science fiction and supernatural, betting mainly on the construction of the universe, to arrest its readers, and this was no different here. Gigant has a very intriguing premise, where there is a whole mystery surrounding a strange clock, which makes its host grow its physical size, giving "super powers" to those who behave it, this in itself is something that catches the eye, especially when one sees that there are many more things behind this equipment, and this has kept me entertained until the third or fourth volume, but I realized that this premise alone didn't seem so interesting in the end, and a lot of it comes from the characters that interact with that premise, but I'll talk about it later. So we can say that this work does have the same aspects that draw attention in Gantz and Inuyashiki, its mysterious atmosphere, its supernatural elements and the author's strange fetish for UFOs and giant women, but that alone did not captivate my reading until the end of this work, and in the end, many elements presented were discarded or simply forgotten by the manga, points that only make this universe have no narrative logic and seem very poor in several aspects. The manga has an empty world, lifeless and without any sense of closeness, much of this also comes from its art. The height of artistic laziness As in other works, the author uses a lot of 3d art in his sets, objects and characters, which I really don't understand how it got so bad here, compared to Gantz for example. The scenes that the author uses this technique, everything is very unnatural, compared to the the handmade trace, we see sharp scenes made in a 3d environment, and 2d characters inserted there in the scene without the worry of making the blending of the layers more natural. In different cases, even the notion of spacing are completely lost, having scenarios with different vanishing points, and characters with completely different points of view , especially for those who are more attentive to the technical aspects of the art. Unfortunately, the problem with the art of this manga is not limited to just the pre-rendered 3d scenes, but also the 2d art, especially Chiho's anatomy, man, it's very bizarre to see this character's anatomy, nothing there makes sense, it seems that her entire body is designed with the sole and exclusive purpose of shocking, her bizarrely huge breasts, which contrast a lot with her thin body and her anatomy in general, which clearly was designed just to draw the attention of readers, so that you buy this work and look what the new weirdness will be this time... And well... I wish that was the only problem. It seems that the author ran away from some perspective classes really, especially when drawing characters in profile, it's very strange how it seems that the skull of the characters is reduced when drawn in profile, and I don't know if that was the intention in fact, because it was very strange. Or even looking at the most basic part of the manga, such as framing and takes, where basically we have scenes that only seek to emphasize the body of some character, and without actually working to make a scene more dramatic, or exciting, the drama of this manga is very bad, as is its sense of action. Overall, the art of this manga is very insufficient, even more knowing the artistic skill of the author. Flat and uninteresting characters The character building of this manga is terrible, and as we basically only have two main characters in the work, Chiho and Rei, this should be the “easiest” part to do, as we only have two characters to build and develop their relationships with, but even in this the author fails miserably. Speaking a little more about Rei, by far the most poorly written character in this manga, Rei is basically a completely uninteresting high schooler with no clear life purpose, no internal or external conflict, just a normal teenager, who purposely causes a bit of anger and pity in the readers, because Rei was written to be a weak, emotional character who never takes the lead in his life's decisions. At first, I thought we would see him grow over the course of the manga, becoming a strong person, who aims to protect Chiho, anyway, I expected there to be a classic narrative arc of the weak character who gets strong, either mentally or physically, but Rei is literally the even from the beginning to the end of the work, not even going through the greatest atrocities that humanity has ever witnessed, such as the arrival of Satan on earth, makes him change in some way, at least show some reaction to the millions of death that occur in the work, but the only thing Rei does is cry tirelessly and act like a spoiled child (the restaurant scene is just ridiculous). And on top of his failure, Rei meets a porn star in which he was a super fan, and after building a non-existent relationship, Rei and this actress start dating. Talking now a little more about Chiyo, she is the one that comes closest to having a minimum of in-depth narrative in this manga. At first, we see that Chiyo suffered a lot from the loss of her father, and that from then on, she took some directions considered wrong in her life, such as being part of the pornographic industry, for example, apart from all the troubled relationship with her family, where her mother, despite despising her daughter's profession, exploits her financially, and even if she is bothered by it, Chiyo always helps her, showing a great kindness that is intrinsic to the character. Chiyo also doesn't have a very well stipulated narrative arc in "screen time" in the manga, she is much more believable than Rei, where the facts that happen over time affect her in a positive or negative way, changing her actions. and making her take the lead in the action unit and move the events of the story, and that's really cool, but in the end, she could be better used in the work, especially regarding the construction of her relationship with Rei, and all the dilemmas that this relationship brings, finally, in the end, both characters are poorly developed throughout the work, making me wonder why I read this until the end. In summary, this work brings together everything that the Oku fan will like, bitching, sci-fi, blood roaming on the screen, but on the other hand, it brings a bad plot, poorly developed characters and a wasted premise, but in the end, it's still a work that differs minimally from the shits we see out there.
the creator of Gantz is back with another one and it's just as weird and over the top so to keep things simple here boy meets a girl who happens to be a porn star they start dating she turns into a giant and starts fighting aliens yeah it makes absolutely no sense but that's the beauty of it it's so enjoyable that who cares I'm just here for the ride baby there's great art and some genuinely hilarious moments mixed in as long as the manga can keep me entertained and that's all that matters and this one has been able to do justthat very rarely can something keep me waiting for the next chapter like this did
Gigant ventures into uncharted territory by weaving together the lives of a wannabe high school movie director and a porn actress. The latter, dealing with her own personal problems, finds herself in a crazy situation where she becomes a massive hero, literally. Thanks to some twist of fate, she gets her hands on a mysterious device from future heroes, giving her the power to transform into a giant and fight off monstrous kaijus that are terrorising Tokyo. This mash-up of genres, mixing the porn industry with sci-fi and epic kaiju battles, sets up an exciting and captivating premise. However, even though Gigant recognises the potential ofits supernatural elements and romantic storyline, it struggles to find the right balance between the two. The manga leans heavily towards the romance, pushing the thrilling and suspenseful encounters with the kaiju to the background. There are moments when the main character, in the middle of a crazy dragon attack, gets distracted by texting his girlfriend, taking away from the tension and urgency that should be there. It's a mix of humour and frustration as you witness the protagonist's misplaced priorities. Unfortunately, this imbalance affects the overall flow of the story. The first half of Gigant feels disjointed, leaving you unsure of where it's heading. It can be confusing as you try to make sense of the manga's structure and themes. In the end, Gigant falls short of reaching and doesn't quite capture the brilliance of its spiritual predecessor, Gantz. If you're looking for a satirical and comedic journey into the absurdities of sci-fi, internet culture, and unexpected romance, the manga still has some charm. It offers moments of humour, puzzling situations, and explores the lives of unlikely heroes in an extraordinary world.
I read this manga in its entirety yesterday and what can I say it certainly was an experience. The story can basically be reduced down to this: a virgin highschooler meets the love of his life which also happens to be his favorite pornstar; his new found love however becomes increasingly more difficult as the pornstar has the ability to save Japan from the seemingly inevitable apocalypse that is about to go down. Although filled with sex scenes and plot holes the story somehow still managed to keep me hooked, and at times truly amazed me with its absurd originality and weird humor that very rarely evencomes across as social criticism. That said especially past volume 7 reading this manga certainly felt like taking a walk inbetween genius and trash and not being sure where the path is going to take you next.
