Let me start off by saying I'm a huge Kimi no na wa fan. It's my all-time favorite anime movie and I felt that Another Side: Earthbound would be perfect to add some extra story. I sorta always want to discover more things I don't know about it. It's in 2 volumes. The first volume had some relatively short stories that were quite fun to read! I loved them as they added some character background, especially on Tessie, as well as some events that they didn't show in the movie. The second volume, however, is a bit more serious. It talks about Yotsuha and some extra backgroundbehind the rituals and what it all represents in the first story. And in the second, it's all about Futaba (Mitsuha's mom) and Toshiki (her dad). At first I didn't think it would do much cause of how he's depicted in the movie, but they really show a lot of his character here and why he became the way he is now. The story in the vol. 2 also shows what happens when Mitsuha comes to her dad for the second time (as Mitsuha this time), cause in the movie we only see that she comes to his office to talk him into it, but never what actually goes down. This is huuuuuge as I've always been curious about it and honestly, this on its own justifies reading these two alone. And the other stories are basically just awesome bonuses. I definitely recommend these. They're not really connected in any way so getting just vol. 2 would be fine and there's no association to the first one, although since there are only 2, I think it's better to get them both. The stories are wonderful and they really give you unique insight that you don't get in the movie on its own. They're incredibly easy to read and the pages are very nice (physical manga book). The pages are in black and white, except for a few first pages in vol. 1 and 1 page on vol.2. If you're a huge fan like me, definitely consider getting the physical copies, they're not hard to get at the time of writing. All in all, a must-read for fans of the movie!
Mitsuha is a young girl living in a rural town named Itomori and is fed up with her life. One day, her family and friends notice she's suddenly acting strange. Little do they know, a high school boy from Tokyo named Taki Tachibana found himself randomly switching places with her when he fell asleep. But he has no clue how to act as a high school girl in an unfamiliar place! This is the story of the hit novel Kimi no Na wa. from the perspective of Mitsuha's friends and family as they deal with her strange new quirksâand avoid disaster. (Source: Yen Press)
This is basically an extension to the movie. If you haven't watched the movie yet, there's a good chance you're going to be lost. There are 4 stories that take place in between the events of the movie. The supporting characters are fleshed out a lot here and were given motivations on why they think in some way. It also gives more context on some of the scenes in the movie. The art is kind of meh especially compared to the movie. It feels muted. I don't think coloring it would help its case by a lot. The plot barely exists. Some comical parts here, serious part there. Makes the movie look like a literary masterpiece compared to this. This manga is decent on giving more context to the movie. As I said, it is made as an extension so to get the most out of this manga, you have to watch the movie. I wish Makoto Shinkai makes this into a movie or OVA that is somewhat similar to 5 Centimeters per Second in structure someday.
âYour Name. Another Side: Earthboundâ is truly a wonderful compliment to the beloved story of Kimi no Na wa. / Your name. Iâll admit, I was hesitant to purchase both volumes of this side story without having read them online first (this seems to be quite niche, with the second volume being impossible to find in PDF format, but I digress), but I am ultimately so glad I did. I cannot describe much without spoiling both this and the original story, but Earthbound does an excellent job of contextualising past events, as well as elaborating on the motives and actions of supporting characters such as Teshi, Sayaka,Yotsuha, and Toshiki (Mitsuhaâs father). The first volume is a lot more lighthearted, sharing a lot of the same comedy with the original, while the second volume honestly made me tear up a little towards the finale. While still focusing on love like the main story, Earthbound takes a particular interest in also showcasing familial love instead of purely romantic, depicting the history of Miyamizu shrine and the women entrusted to carry its legends, traditions, and history into the future. The only minor flaw is its somewhat strange pacing and sudden tone shift from volume 1 to 2, but that can be excused given its merely filling in space which was not covered in the movie. Overall, I would absolutely recommend picking this up if you enjoyed Your Name as a movie, manga, or both!
