The premise and the first half of the story really might turn off a lot of people and believe me it did the same to me as well. But there's actually a reason for this behavior. The boy was experiencing everything his father did in his childhood which is making his memories mess up with his father's thus the distasteful crush love started. The second half of the story however completely made a 180° jump and we were given Ninomae as the form of a medicine which would later cure our Male lead from his weird complex. The story is worth reading and veryenjoyable. The art work is especially one should enjoy reading. The love story which started rather slowly in the second half was unique, different, somewhat realistic and very wholesome. I repeat don't stop reading and continue. You will understand why he is doing this and how big of a character growth he will get in the last few chapters.
At a glance, Minoru Suzuki appears to be a first-year high school student like any other. However, Minoru sometimes receives flashbacks that seem to derive from his dead father's memory; to complicate things further, these memories feature his mother, Aya Suzuki, from his father's perspective when the two were young and still in school. These flashbacks have caused Minoru to experience incredibly conflicting feelings, especially an undeniable attraction to Aya's body. He cannot easily decipher his emotions, nor does he understand what his father wants him to do with these memories—the only thing Minoru knows for sure is that he loves his mother. [Written by MAL Rewrite] Included one-shot: Volume 1: Lucky Spider
"I'm in love with my mother...I think." From the creator of Mysterious Girlfriend you know your getting yourself into weirder obscure human nature of things, and it just continues here. Ookumo-chan Flashback is a story of coming into adolescence. Minorou our protagonist, experiences the memories of his late father when he was in love with his mother. Although oddly enough, those same feeling start transcending into his world with his mother. It's peculiar in that weird way, almost crossing the borderline of taboo, but it never reaches that point. His mother is a manga artist throwing many hints to Mysterious Girlfriend X, another series from theauthor, it's nice to see subtle hints. His crush is so similar to his mother that she's in the manga club trying to become a manga artist herself. A bit of attachment theory, in which we try to find someone to marry that show the similar behaviors and appearances of our parents. So that's nice to see play out. It's a charming manga that shows the growth into adolescence with many unique feelings one might experience. Overall it's a very wholesome experience that doesn't go overboard with some themes and the art is just a visual heart-warming.
It is shown that mr. riichi ueshiba often has an involvement of "mothers" in his story just like in nazo no kanojo x, but this time it is really great over all. the concept starts off as suzuki minoru gaining access to his deceased fathers older memories which included his mother and his father's romantic relationship, ookumo aya, his mother is a person which he gained a little interest in which is really bad considering they are in a parent and child relationship, this has become a problem for minoru as his flashbacks/memories are being mixed with reality creating a certain attraction to his mother. and throughthe story we can find that minoru really tries his best to know whats good and wrong by his own judgement, he finds himself hanging out with a girl named ninomae, the reason for this is because her and his mother are a bit similar, the story goes as minoru taking a liking into ninomae while slowly ignoring the flashbacks that occured by similarity of events in the present, he takes a liking to ninomae, and thus furthers their relationship through out the story. The art is a 8 because it indeed is a nice art by riichi ueshiba made by hand I enjoyed it alot as well over all 9 if it had an anime adaptation i reckon it would really be a masterpiece.
Wholesome, great art, likeable characters and unique story. "The innocence of first love": nothing describes Ookumo-chan Flashback better than this. This manga is clearly underrated and deserves more attention, I put it in "my plan to read" for so long thinking it was not worth it. Turns out I was wrong and the very first chapter immediately made me invested in the characters. If you are into slice-of-life involving non-cliche romcom then... THIS IS A MUST READ. Why? I will say because "best girls". Wait.. "Best girls"? so you are telling me that it's a hare- No at all! And you will soon understand why.
It features an Oedipus complex just the way the Japanese like it: juicy and full of fanservice. The protagonist's mother is a mangaka, and by the time I finished reading, I realized the whole thing is self-referential to the actual author and his past works (we're talking crystal clear references made for the fans), like Mysterious Girlfriend X. It has meta-references to the manga industry too. For example, if they submit a 30-page manuscript in the story, the actual chapter you're reading is 30 pages long, or 32 pages, and so on (plus subtle details, shading, etc.). The ending wraps up pretty well, although I would have likedto see more development of their relationship without so many flashback interruptions. Maybe a kiss or something, instead of so many time skips. (you will find out when you read it all) It's a short read—funny at times, twisted, and good. I recommend it even more if you're already familiar with the author's other works.
