I'm not a big fan of the gender-bender genre (edit: this has since changed) but I stumbled upon this manga one day and thought the synopsis sounded intriguing, so I decided "you know, why not?". And I have not regretted that decision. Unlike the majority of gender-bender manga, Kamisama no Ekohiiki handles gender and its relationship with sexuality in quite a sensitive manner. No transphobia! Hooray, the bare minimum! But for real, this manga tackles the issue of "it's great to love someone regardless of their gender but that can't always be the case". The plot is nothing special since the primary focus is on themain couple and their struggle to communicate their feelings to each other (as it is with all romance manga). Still, there are several scenes that I found very sweet and that live rent-free in my brain. The characters themselves are pretty plain, but they're used in the story in a way that works well so I'm not complaining all too much. (Also, almost everyone in this manga is bi and i love it.) If you're looking for a cute romance mixed in with some well-written LGBTQ+ characters and intriguing themes about gender and sexuality, then give this a read.
To gain the confidence to confess to his crush, Yashiro visits a secluded shrine for 100 days straight. This earns him the attention of the enshrined deity and his fox attendant Ukon who follow Yashiro on the 100th day to see how the confession turns out. However, they are surprised to see him confess to a guy, Yashiro's longtime friend Kenta, only for Kenta to turn him down. Although heartbroken, Yashiro tries to joke around with Kenta, but he accidentally gets killed when a truck runs into him. Yashiro awakens in the presence of the shrine's god and Ukon, and as a show of gratitude, the god decides to restore him back to life to give him a second chance with Kenta. In doing so, the god grants his wish to be reborn as a high school girl and gives her the name Kagura Tendou. However, she soon discovers that the god and Ukon plan to watch over her relationship with Kenta, although she's the only one who can see and hear them. 7 for enjoyment. This should be tagged shounen ai, boys love, yaoi or whatever you want to call it. To start off, I love this manga. It's a nice, short, enjoyable read. Unfortunately the biggest problem with the manga is the plot. It's all over the place. It started off as a gender bender fantasy, then there were a supernatural episode, then it ends with a sweet romance. There were times where I didn't know what the manga was trying to show. Also, I appreciate the spotlight on lgbt issues, but the end parts felt a little cheesy and forced. With more planning, the execution of themescould be much improved. Overall I enjoyed the manga, but only as a romance. As a longtime lover of shoujo, this is the first time I've read anything remotedly bl, and I can attest this is the gayest shit ever! I recommend this for anyone whose looking for a good romance story, because this is where the manga shines most.
At first I didn't know what to expect because this manga being a Gender Bender one but since the first chapter I already loved what was going on and I couldn't stop reading! This manga is so heartwarming that made me make an account here to review it and favorite it so I never forger how much I liked this piece of work. Is a has a few chapters but around 40 pages each so is really takes a while to read it all and I did in just one sit. The characters are so enjoyable and you never really know what is going to happen next andalso thanks to the fact that the story is short it never leaves you in a point when you get bored.
