Dementia 21 is a very surreal manga about a home help aide who helps out elderly people with no clue about how bizarre things can get. The artwork is very detailed and is something that I personally like. There's no plot as such, since each chapter is a plot in itself, but I suppose this is a manga which heavily relies on the art rather than the plot. No comments about characters since it's as relevant as the plot. Overall it was an enjoyable read, especially if you are into surreal/bizarre/experimental stuff. It's sort of like Junji Ito's works, but without the gore.
Dementia 21 is a series of short stories about the day-to-day work of a home caregiver. Absurdity is perhaps the best word to describe this manga—each chapter brings a new surprise. Kago continually finds inventive ways to make each story ridiculously absurd yet undeniably funny. The series also tackles many social and eldercare issues in Japan, which not only lends the manga a sense of dark humour but also adds weight to the narrative, creating the feeling that some kind of reality persists even within itsabsurdist world. Despite its lack of a central plot or deep character development, this manga remains one of the best examples of how to blend creativity and humour.
