OVA
Finished Airing
Mar 1, 2004 to Jul 1, 2004
In the first short, Lowe Gear and the Junk Guild make a stop at an mobile suit parts auction on Earth where Lowe purchases a head taken from a modified BuCUE suit which, when attached to the arm of his Red Frame Astray, acts as a dual beam saber. Lowe tries to decrypt some combat data contained in the head, but is shortly engaged by, and goes into combat with, several ZAFT suits including a CGUE DEEP Arms. In the second short, Blue Frame pilot Gai Murakamo engages and, with the help of his fellow Serpent Tail mercenaries, traps a GINN High Mobility Type. He then faces off with the legendary Edward Harrelson, who pilots a Sword Calamity Gundam and has just finished destroying a fleet of ZAFT ships. (Source: ANN)

Erm what is this?? Two uninteresting, pointless short stories that are of such sub-standard quality and have such a different feel to "Gundam Seed" that you could probably get away with thinking "Mobile Suit Gundam Seed MSV Astray" (or, "Ass-Tray" for short) was made by amateurs fans of the show. Apparently "Ass-Tray" is actually meant to be advertisement for some Gundam models. And if that sounds like a lame excuse for a show, then you're absolutely right! The feeble, slapstick humour, paper thin characters and story line makes "Ass-Tray" one of the least worthwhile things I've ever watched. I mean, not only is the second storythrown straight into a confusing setting, it doesn't even have a proper ending. While you can argue that there's only a limited amount of things you can do in a 7 minute episode, the question to be addressed is that, if the results are this bad, then what's the point of making these at all? It's not even crap in a funny way, it's just... crap! And there aren't even any production values to speak of. Conclusion: Steer well clear of "Ass-Tray"- even though it's short, it's a complete waste of your time!

To answer the question posed in the other review, this is a pair of shorts intended to advertise the Gundam SEED Astray manga. One episode follows the "Red Frame" Astray, the other follows the "Blue Frame" Astray. Both episodes demonstrate the personalities of their casts while having minimal plot, just enough to intrigue the viewer into reading the manga. Personally, I was more interested by the "Blue Frame" cast, though I have no interest in moving on to the manga; I watched this merely for completionism's sake. As a SEED spin-off, MSV Astray's greatest strength is the fact that it isn't a shallow rehash of aUniversal Century Gundam show. The most interesting aspect of this OVA, in my opinion, is seeing material from SEED's Cosmic Era timeline animated in a style that closer resembles that of late 90s Gundam animation, particularly Gundam X and Turn A Gundam. Fans of the Astray manga might like to see brief moments of characters and mecha they know animated, but aside from that there's not much here that will interest a casual watcher unless said casual watcher wants to be convinced to read the Astray manga. And while it is a low bar to clear, MSV Astray is at least better than SEED Destiny.
