Hoshi ni Negai wo: Fantastic Cat

/////English//// (Review originally written in Spanish) (mas abajo la reseña original en español) I know she’s alive… somewhere… I hope to see her again someday. *Wish Upon a Star: Fantastic Cat* is the sequel to a very obscure ONA that I personally liked a lot, *Wish Upon a Star: Cold Body + Warm Heart*, which I reviewed here: (https://letterboxd.com/yuzojoozu/film/wish-upon-a-star-cold-body-warm-heart/))I recommend reading the previous review because it gives almost all the context about what this OVA is and what it’s generally about. Hikari and company return, though now in a much more secondary role. Atlantis is still searching for them and, in the middle of all that, we are introduced to the true protagonist of this ONA: Lilliy, a student at a virtual school that Hikari attends (purely out of curiosity, I assume). The two become friends and try to catch a cat and, throughout the process, we discover the truth about Lilly. “Wish Upon a Star” is a weird project, and this second part only makes it feel even weirder to me xddd. While the first ONA had experimental animation, really good music, and felt like the beginning of something, this second iteration has no cel shading, no particularly memorable soundtrack, and above all, it feels like just another episode of something much bigger… although it makes up for it with much better animated action scenes and moments that feel straight out of horror movies (plus the school setting is super memorable, I wish someone would recreate it in VRChat xd). Lilly’s story is good, but it could have been developed much more. She’s such a cute, sweet, and kind character, and her conflict is interesting: wondering whether she’s real or not, never having known anything beyond the confines of this school, believing she doesn’t exist… knowing that nobody can see her except Hikari, with whom she forms a beautiful friendship… She’s a truly tragic character, and her conclusion really is sad… though hopeful. But unlike Hikari, because she’s more mysterious, they don’t develop her the way they should, and her character arc just kind of stays there, with hopes that she’ll return, but that’s never going to happen… although the plot twist that she and Hikari might be sisters was something I absolutely loved… too bad it never really goes anywhere. And on top of that, for being the conclusion to this OVA duology, it leaves me with even more questions and feeling unsatisfied. I would’ve liked a third installment, mainly to wrap some things up and let the anime leave with its head held high and say: “yeah, this was brief but intense.” In reality, it was brief, fleeting, melancholic, and leaves you wanting more… *Wish Upon a Star: Fantastic Cat* is a strange conclusion, but a memorable one nonetheless. All of these characters will stay in my heart… connection lost, end of session (RESEÑA EN ESPAÑOL) Sé que está viva… en algún lugar… ojalá volverla a ver. Wish Upon a Star: Fantastic Cat es la secuela de un ONA muy desconocido que personalmente me gustó mucho, Wish Upon a Star: Cold Body + Warm Heart, a la cual le hice su reseña acá (https://letterboxd.com/yuzojoozu/film/wish-upon-a-star-cold-body-warm-heart/) Les aconsejo que lean la anterior reseña porque da casi todo el contexto de lo que es esta OVA y de qué va en líneas generales. Hikari y compañía vuelven, pero ahora en un papel más secundario. Atlantis los sigue buscando y, entre medias, se nos presenta a la verdadera protagonista de este ONA: Lilliy, una estudiante de una escuela virtual a la que asiste Hikari (meramente por exploración, quiero suponer). Ambas se hacen amigas e intentan atrapar a un gato y, en el transcurso, descubrimos la verdad acerca de Lilly. “Wish Upon a Star” es un proyecto raro, y esta segunda parte solo hace que me parezca aún más raro xddd. Mientras que la primera “ONA” tenía una animación experimental, música muy buena y parecía el inicio de algo, esta segunda iteración no tiene cel shading, no tiene un soundtrack memorable como tal y, sobre todo, parece un episodio más de algo mucho más grande… aunque se compensa con escenas de acción mucho mejor animadas y con momentos que parecen sacados de cintas de terror (además de que el escenario de la escuela es súper memorable, ojalá alguien la recreara en VRChat xd). La historia de Lilly es buena, pero se podría desarrollar mucho más. Es un personaje súper lindo, tierno y noble y su conflicto es interesante: el saber si es real o no, el nunca haber conocido más allá de los confines de esta escuela, el creer que no existe… el saber que nadie puede verla excepto Hikari, con quien entabla una linda amistad… Es un personaje trágico en toda regla y su conclusión verdaderamente es triste… aunque esperanzadora. Pero, a diferencia de Hikari, como es más misteriosa, no la desarrollan como deben y su arco de personaje se queda ahí nomás, con esperanzas de que vuelva, pero eso nunca va a suceder… pero el plot twist de que ella y Hikari podrían ser hermanas me encantó… lástima que se queda ahí. Y además, para ser la conclusión de la duología de OVAs, me deja con más dudas y con sabor a poco. Me hubiera gustado una tercera entrega, más que nada para cerrar algunas cosas y que el anime se pueda ir con la cabeza en alto y decir: “sí, esto fue breve pero intenso”. En realidad fue breve, fugaz, melancólico y te deja con ganas de más… Wish Upon a Star: Fantastic Cat es una conclusión extraña, pero memorable al fin y al cabo, todos estos personajes estarán en mi corazón… desconexión, fin de la sesión
