I thought the movie was well executed in terms of animation, storyboarding, directing, fight sequences, and the sound (especially in IMAX) but the story itself falls flat on it's face. The whole premise of the movie just doesn't make sense and I was distracted throughout the whole movie on just the premise. Everything is too convenient and never explained how so many characters all ended up where they did. The animation style along with the wooden characters just made things worst. The movie tries to add symbolism and mythical creatures along with pacifist themes, and it's fine if they don't explain the world but ifthe characters themselves and the circumstance of their plight doesn't vibe, make sense or likable, all you have left is some cool fight scenes in between dialogue.
Scarlet draws heavily on Hamlet, so the story itself is not especially original and at times it felt predictable. Even so, I still found it satisfying and genuinely enjoyable, largely because of the animation and the sense of energy Hosoda brings to all his films. Visually, it was stunning, and seeing it on an IMAX screen really elevated the experience. There is a fair amount of plot armour scattered throughout, but it did not detract much from my enjoyment. The characters often felt exaggerated, either unrealistically virtuous or cartoonishly evil, yet this seemed intentional. The film is very clear about how it wants you to feelabout each character, pushing you to strongly like or dislike them based on their actions. While not subtle, the characters’ motivations were clear and mostly convincing in driving the story forward. I can see why this film might not resonate as strongly with everyone, but as a long-time fan of Mamoru Hosoda, I found it easy to appreciate. For me, he remains one of the most consistent anime filmmakers working today. Hosoda has yet to disappoint me. Scarlet may not be perfect, but it is well-crafted, visually impressive, and thoroughly enjoyable. I would absolutely recommend it to fans of Hosoda’s work.
I'm just gonna straight to the points : watch it if you're interested, but keep your expectation as low as possible when you decided to watched it. This movie giving me some Ghibli vibes about there's a lot of interpretation from what happening through the movie. Since I'm not a Ghibli fan, ( I'm dumb when talking about the message in some kind of metaphorical forms) I don't understand almost anything from the creator want to tell us about those kind of things , but I definitely still can enjoyed the movie until the end. The plot was very simple about revenge ( read thesynopsis ) there's nothing special about it, like really. The characterization from the MC or other side characters was nothing special too, it's just really like a Shounen type of characters. BUT the animation and scoring was really the one that makes me can enjoyed this movie until the credits end. The animation is combination of 2D and 3D, so if you can't enjoying a 3D type of animation so this wasn't the movie that you'll enjoy but it's still a very good 3D for me. The art was really beautiful, I don't know why but some of the frame makes me remember of anime Devilman: crybaby, but it's just really my mind playing some trick. And the Scoring is the one that's makes it worth to watch in the cinema! Trust me, if this movie gonna release in the streaming platforms, you can't never ever feel the fullness of the background music and the sounds effect that this movie gonna give you (unless you have the technology about that lol). Conclusion : watch it if you interested, but set the expectation as low as possible and just remove your brain from thinking about the plot. I know 2025 giving us some masterpieces movie like Chainsawman: Reze Arc in the last few months before, that's why perhaps a lot of people giving too harsh scores about it since this movie is really flopped in terms of plot and characterization. But about the animation and scoring, Its definitely worth to watch (atleast in my opinion lol :'p) . Thanks for reading, it's my first time making reviews since I kinda feel bad about the score. So, I hope my reviews give you guys some insight about the movie. Have a nice day! Edit: the song tittle is " A celebration Song " if you guys perhaps wanted to hear the full song, it's a good song too in my opinion!
Well....LOL. I never thought I'd write a review but I felt the need to vent, especially given the time investment and the cost to see it in IMAX (20£ seriously??). I'll start with the good. I'd say I've seen a fair amount of anime movies in cinemas and I can confidently say Scarlet is one of the most, if not the most, ambitious anime films I've seen in a cinema. I'm sure even traditionalists can agree that the CGI is quite stunning at times, especially in an IMAX screen. The sheer spectacle of it was excellent and I do hope future theatrical anime releases follow suitin making the most of a big screen. And now for the bad… The story is essentially Hosoda's take on Shakespeare's most renowned play, Hamlet. The main difference comes in shifting it to an isekai setting, which on the surface sounds like an interesting concept but this completely falls apart in execution. This is because, following the shift to the otherworld, the story completely abandons any congruency with the original story to which it had been relatively faithful to beforehand, and instead becomes what I can only describe as fantasy isekai slop. New characters are also introduced and given big roles, characters begin overly explain their motivations and minor characters from the original play become 'mini-bosses' with their own arcs. All of this takes away from the most interesting character in the movie, Scarlet, and surely would've been more digestible in a series format. The dialogue is similarly lackluster. This is most prevalent with the secondary protagonist, Hijri, a 21st century paramedic who provides nothing beyond being repetitively sappy and morally condescending which I suppose is a common archetype in a lot animes but it is a shame when you have a badass character like Scarlet being limited by the excessive pacifist talk. This also led to most of the 'philosophical' points of the story being given in the form of many rhetorical questions such as, "What is life?" "What is death?" "How can I forgive?", which I think Hosoda thought were profound when they were anything but. The script could've instead built on the world building or could've helped explain how multiple eras and cultures were able to coexist in this otherworld but alas the endless detours and conversations about peace were deemed to be more important. My final and biggest gripe was in the editing. In one part of the film you may see a grimy murder which shifts to a quiet campfire which obviously turns to a musical scene... Because why shouldn't we have a number in our drama about regicide and murder? LMFAO. It was incredibly cringe and I cannot fathom how anyone involved thought this was in any way a good idea to include.
Vengeance, No I Have Medic Scarlet is about a danish princess, who is lost and confused in a land, she does not understand, but luckily that japanese medic is there for her. It's a movie, that sacrifice everything to the theme, the theme of vengeance, and how it destroys one's life, but then the problem, is that it is one note in much of the movie. the world doesn't feel coherent, it just feel like it exist for the main character to do her character development, the more you try to find logic in it, the worse it becomes. My biggest obstacle from enjoying the movie was, thesetting it was just so abstract and out there, that it was hard to really get involved, in what was happening. The production of the movie is good, the 3D animation looks top notch, and we are finally gone to a point, where 3D does not look bad in anime. the backgrounds look great ,and there are some segments in the movie that are great in their execution. It's interesting, but it left me feeling empty.
