A word of warning for people who have not read the Manga: This is a flash forward that spoils the ending of the Manga I don't understand why they decided to start the Anime with some of the final chapters of the Manga. I get the impression that they are not confident in their own source material and in getting people hooked with the more down to earth slice of life beginnings of this story. The trailers were the same, showing mass alien warfare, when this story really isn't about that. It's also really not about the mangaka dad you accompany in this episode. It's aboutKadode and her friend group living under the shadow of the mothership hovering in the sky. I hope that the rest of the adaptation doesn't do random time skips anymore. You shouldn't watch this until you have finished the show itself and gotten to the point where this actually happens timeline wise. Anything else is just spoiling yourself and setting confused expectations for this story.
If you’re an anime-only, it’s advised you skip this prologue and just go straight to the first episode. It’s perplexing why they chose this as Dededede’s opener considering this is definitely not what the actual meat of the story taste like, but I do understand the intention. Most likely, the producers thought that adding moments before the ending would be a good way to build intrigue. For example, when I get spoiled on a story by a friend, it makes me highly critical of everything I see in the story from that point on, guessing if this would lead to the spoiled ending or that my friendhad just mislead me. It keeps me intrigued. But for the case of Dededede, I don’t think it works well. I think this prologue is just filled with exposition that just confuses and ultimately misleads the viewer’s expectations, turning them off from the show. It could work since as you follow the girls life, you get attached to them, so the mystery of the prologue will keep the viewers at the edge of their seat. But prologues are all about giving the general idea of what your story is going to be like, and this simply doesn’t do it’s job as a prologue. The first episode already does a great job introducing the characters and the world they inhabit. It also gives the perfect general idea — a silly story that doesn’t shy away from tackling serious problems, or in other words, being ‘deep’. In conclusion, the prologue is unecessary and it’s better to skip it, but if you did accidentally watch it or want to watch it, it’s also fine. It doesn’t spoil the entire ending, just moments before it.
Not a good introduction to the series. It seems like they want you to think this series is about a fast-paced post-apocalyptic alien invasion by adapting the last arc. This is far from what the series is actually about. You can read the synopsis of the main series to see the difference. Despite avoiding the original 'slice of life' start of the manga, they instead give you exposition dump about many things you never see before in this episode. Seriously, there isn't much value added by having this in animated form. Early episodes should give people an idea of how the entire series will be, andI think this episode completely fails to do so. I would recommend people to skip this and go straight to episode 1. You didn't miss anything.
Episode 0, Dead Dead Demons Deeded Destruction I've been waiting for this anime for 3 and a half years and honestly it feels quite unbelievable to be watching it right now! This is a pretty weird place to start the anime at, as it kind of spoils a lot of the events but also brings some intrigue for what happened before this. The animation for this episode disappointed me, as although the background art was fantastic the art direction was kinda... off? Animation was stiff at times and characters would go off model a lot. Now this could be just because I'm not used to the animationstyle yet but so far, it leaves a lot to be desired. This short run of the manga wasn't really my favourite as it just throws a ton of exposition at you which also contributes to it being a weird starting point. Regardless, I had a ton of fun and I'm really excited to be taken on this journey once again!
This episode has a spot... not as a prologue, but as the filler episode between 16 and 17. So please, when watching please do so in that order to get the full mileage out of it. With that being said, and especially taken into context after watching the whole series, I think it is a must watch if you would like to watch the entire series. It provides much needed context for the last episode (17) and bridges the gap to that ending. This might sound convoluted but it is, in my opinion, better to watch episodes 1-16 of the main series and skip this episodeand episode 17 altogether. I think that episode 16 is a perfect end to stop at since it gets pretty janky in 17 and I wasn't as satisfied by it. I think ending at 16 perfectly captures the theme of the story and anything beyond it detracts from the value. TLDR: If you plan to watch the entire series, then fit this between episode 16 and 17 of main series, otherwise the best ending is stopping at 16 and skipping this and 17.
