This review is meant to help anyone deciding whether to start the series, especially since detailed reviews are rare. While the show is competently made, its strengths are limited and its flaws are persistent. Shixiong A Shixiong, also known as My Senior Brother Is Too Steady, is an easy skip unless it is being watched purely to pass time or there is nothing else available. At 133 episodes (at the time of this writing), it requires a large time commitment, and the series does not offer enough payoff to justify that length for the "seasoned audience." On the positive side, the visuals are solid for a 2023release, even if the series doesn’t utilize the latest rendering engine. While commendable, the graphics fall short of higher-end productions like "Beyond Time’s Gaze" or "Eclipse of Illusion." That said, the most notable strength lies in the overall production quality. This series remains thoughtfully produced in most movie aspects, and never feels sloppy, which sets it above most xianxia adaptations in this regard. One of the series’ strongest highlights is the romantic development involving the main character in the second season, which adds meaningful engagement and emotional grounding. The protagonist himself has a refreshing personality. Unlike many xianxia leads, he isn’t driven by revenge, instead presenting as carefree and humorous. However, this same detached attitude can also be a double-edged sword (later explained below). The chibi-style humor is frequently criticized and is used far too often, though it is not the biggest issue. The more serious problem is the lack of tone and stakes. The main character regularly treats the world, its dangers, and its villains as jokes or inconveniences. Because he does not take his own world seriously, it's harder for the viewer to take this show seriously as well. Another major issue is the absence of meaningful struggle or clearly defined progression. The main character begins as a hidden prodigy with little resistance or hardship. New abilities appear without explanation, training, or buildup, which makes them feel unearned. Progression is poorly tracked, with cultivation levels remaining unclear or unchanged for long stretches (sometimes lasting up to 50 episodes). Other characters suffer from the same issue, and higher tiers leading up to Sages are never clearly defined, making power scaling confusing and inconsistent. Without clear growth or challenge, the world fails to feel engaging. Repetition is another major issue. "Paper-mans" are heavily overused by the MC, as is the Yin Yang symbol across multiple characters and techniques, which quickly becomes visually monotonous. Additionally, the world-building is weak, feeling small and limited, as if every new region explored is within an arm's length. One of the bigger issues is that the main plot and primary antagonist(s) are introduced almost immediately, leaving little room for intrigue or discovery. As the series continues, conflicts with the villains become extremely repetitive and predictable. Overall, there is little momentum or payoff. Progression is unclear, tension is minimal (aside from one--the main plot), and very few milestones feel earned. While the series is not poorly produced, it lacks the depth, creativity, and narrative weight needed to stay engaging over such a long runtime. Where it could have improved: with a more serious tone, a more expansive and mysterious universe, and better handling of character growth, it could have been significantly better. This series may appeal to viewers who have already watched most well-regarded xianxia titles or are completely new to the genre and have no expectations. Experienced xianxia viewers looking for something on the level of "Renegade Immortal" or "A Mortal’s Journey to Immortality" --will likely be disappointed and should avoid it.
