"Bokura no Yoake" is about an alien ship that crash-landed to Earth and was discovered by our protagonist. Is this the set up for a save-the-world story from an all-poweful villain? Wrong! Its only desire is to return to space. However, it is bound to a series of limitations that it, the protagonist Sawatari, and the supporting cast have to overcome. Admittedly, the premise is somewhat absurd and decent amounts of suspension of disbelief is required to enjoy it, but enjoyed I did. It was a fun watch and I'm sure you'll grow fond of Nanakoâand Aoi Yuuki's excellent voice acting. As a coming-of-age story that bothembraces certain clichĂ©s and subverts some others, Bokura no Yoake executes a sendoff story very well and tackles the usual themes someone of Sawatari's age would encounter with a fantastical flavor added.
Its way more interesting and good than it looks. You can think its a kid anime but it's not, at least not in the way a kid anime should be! Although this anime has some flaws like missing more weights to emotional scenes, slightly off in story execution or kinda rushed scenes. However the anime perfectly executes and purposes and never lost sight of the goal unlike some other animes which shows a primary goal but in the end, doing another thing as well as showing the ending with half baked scenes, unfulfilled results, different outcomes for different efforts being put in. I like the art, character design and the world building It is definitely a hidden gem and I can see it has been overlooked by most people. I recommend it of course to watch it fully. Although the spaceship design would have been more like scifi movies, well, that was good also. It deserves at least 8/10
Overall uninspiring and barely engaging. The best parts are the slick animation, good VAs, and a mostly coherent plotâbut even then, itâs boring, unfocused, and really falls apart halfway through. The good upfront: the character designs, water effects, and world art are great. Itâs clean, has a sparkle to it that stands out, and makes the characters feel like more than generic templates. The VAs are solid and carry the audio side wellâneither annoying nor painfully flat. For example, the alien clearly speaks differently, with a flat affect compared to the kids. The service bot sounds like itâs genuinely programmed to be a personal aid. Thesedetails are appreciated and add some immersion. That said, there are a lot of issues that drag this from great to just âmeh.â The plot driver is really weak. The goal is to return the alien to space, and soon it becomes a race against time before the complex is demolished. On paper, this should be straightforwardâespecially once the adults get involved. But then it turns out the adults were involved long ago and just⊠gave up. Seriously? An alien stranded in a housing complex is a massive deal, and theyâre like, ânah, we quit after some guy fell off the roof.â Where is the agency? Why isnât this treated as important? Thereâs unprecedented science happening here, and it was literally stuffed in a box in a closet. The kidsâ social issues are mostly just in passing. Thereâs some bullying here and there, but itâs secondary to the plot and doesnât really add anything meaningful. Then there are accidents involving kids playing on rooftopsâwhich again, why is this a narrative focus? The story is about getting the alien to space, not reminding the audience that kids shouldnât be on rooftops. Anyways, the animation is fine. Itâs not offensively bad, and it doesnât really do anything wrongâbut at the same time, it doesnât do much thatâs great either. So with its strengths and weaknesses combined, it ends up being, at best, âwatchable.â"
