There is an air of sophistication here many full-length movies strive to accomplish. Wei manages to instill emotional catharsis through the smallest of details. He's able to portray longing and change of mindset without a word being uttered. The work also feels proud of its own artistry, glorifying Chinese painting in every drawing. It showcases such aesthetic as much as it can without ever interfering with the narrative. It's genuinely rewarding to watch an artist develop a distinctive style and grow confident enough to fully embrace it without alienating the audience. Simple yet wholly effective. Mu Di is only bested by his last and bestproject.
